How much should a Wedding DJ Cost?

Probably more than you'd like to pay. Why? This is YOUR day! You should expect more professionalism than the status quo, than what's been set out there as acceptable. Here are some things you really should be considering, instead of "just the cost!"

Is your performer in it just for the money, or is he/she in it because they truly care about the outcome of your event? Some DJ's barely charge enough to break even on the cost of labor, supplies and equipment. But the love of the job makes it worth while.

Bride & Grooms spend thousands of dollars between the reception hall and catering alone. They'll spend about a thousand on a photographer. Engagement photos, the photos at the ceremony, photos after the ceremony and then that photographer will only stay about an hour after dinner to get the "first dances" pictures. They'll even spend $350 on a vegi tray! But, honesty ask yourself this; what are the two main things you remember about a reception? The catering and the entertainment. How was the veil? Smothered chicken? Beef tips? On the other hand, when it comes to hiring a professional DJ, they don't think it's worth spending anything over $300-400. Isn't the success of your night, worth more than a vegi platter?

Here are some things to think about. Does the DJ you're considering rely on Expertise or Ego? Do they deserve your trust? Have solid MC skills? Know how to use their equipment properly? Have professional equipment for that matter? Understand the pacing and timing of the reception? Have the personality that reflects what you're trying to achieve for your reception? Care about your wedding? Are they honored to be apart of your big day, or is it just another pay check to them?

Professionalism is defined as competence and skill. The professional understands and cares that your day is special and will use his competence and skills to help make your day enjoyable and memorable. For the stereotypical DJ's, the common perception is that they treat weddings as just another "gig" on the calendar.

So, how much should your Wedding DJ cost? There's no exact science to give you that answer. A lot of factors should be considered; like your visions, needs, wants and even budget. Here's a guideline to what you should expect to pay for... How important is the success of your reception to you and your fiance? Do you want classy intros, someone who entertains instead of interrupts? A system that won't look tacky in photos and great music & dancing at the reception? Someone to give you advice and guide you on a timeline for toasts, cutting the cake and first dances? Someone you can trust? That will give you peace of mind that everything will go smoothly and positively impact the success of your wedding reception?

If you've said yes to any of these questions, you want to hire the best, most Professional DJ you can afford. What do good DJ's charge? I'm sure you'll find cheaper DJ's than what I charge (for I've lost many potential clients to lower cost DJ's), but if you want a really great DJ, expect to pay more than some of the estimates you'll receive from other companies.

My first dance of 2011, and it starts off friggin' awesome! What a great place to start the year, than with my favorite school. Thanks to all the students that showed up for this dance. Thanks to facebook, the teachers and students passing the word on. We had a lot better attendance than the last after-game dance. I bought some new black lights, new LED lights, 500 glow sticks, fog and strobes to make this show stand out! And starting this year, I'm attempting to do Video Logs for viewing as well. Looking back on 2010...

2010 was "THE BEST" year for me and this business. I rounded out the year with just over 30 events. There were about 6 I did not document, per client's request or I just did not have the camera with me that evening. It's amazing what social media, word of mouth and friendships can do for a business. I owe many thanks to many people, and what better way to say it than on my blog, on facebook and or in person... Since I've already made my post on facebook thanking every single client and personally thanking many in person, next is to thank you on here. I can't thank you enough for helping me grow my business like it has this past year.

I'll go down my list of events, then name off a few others... I don't think theres a thing I would have done differently about this reception. This was the type of reception most brides dream of and was I glad to be apart of it. This wedding, I had been excited for, for a long time comin'! Earl & Angela inspired me to get into what's called "Up-Lighting" and adding it to my show. So, they were my "test-run" clients per se. I think it came out, in my opinion absolutely beautiful! I mean, look at what the lights do to this room. This is an older building, but with the modifications they've done to the hall, then adding the up-lighting, it made this place look like a grand ball room! The night turned out great, a lot of dancing, a lot of drinking, a lot of laughs... I had a great time at this reception. Thanks Earl & Angela and congratulations!

Sloan Museum Brews Cruise 2010

MIProDJ had a blast being part of Friends of Sloan Longway Brews Cruise 2010. It was held at Sloan Museum Courtyard at the Flint Cultural Center campus. A fun and casual sampling of Michigan beers. We were able to enjoy unique beers from some of Michigan’s finest breweries such as Arcadia, New Holland, Dark Horse, Founders, Keweenaw and Arbor Brewing Company, courtesy of d’Vine Wines and Rave Associates. Highly recommended to attend this if your a beer or wine enthusiast!

VFW Swartz Creek Golf Outing

I had the pleasure of supporting our US Troops this weekend! Sergeant Rynca Jr was back home and had a chance to enjoy life for a minute with a round of golf with some friends and family. He's getting ready to be deployed again soon, and the VFW had adopted this troop and had a fund raiser to send care packages to IRAQ. I believe they raised about $5600 before expenditures, so great job Lori! Over 100 people participated in the 18 hole challenge with events such as the Longest Drive, hole in one and many other fun activities, all supporting the troops! They also had a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and drawings for some awesome Redwings signed memorabilia as well as a portrait of Comerica Park, signed by Ernie Harwell! MIProDJ was honored to be apart of this event.

We wish Sergeant Rynca the best when he gets deployed next month, for which I believe the 7th time of his career in the US Army. And I’d also like to send a huge thank you to all the other troops currently serving our country, so we continue can live the way we do today.

This wedding had one of the biggest crowds, the best interaction I think I've ever had, I mean I had the dance floor packed, literally til the end of the night. The Gutzeit's just know how to party! I Challenge You!

Hey everyone,

Man, this one of the best weekends I’ve had in a very long time, when it comes to my DJ business. I drove down to Lake Orion on Friday night to entertain Genesee High School students, for their 2010 Prom. Then turned around and performed at Melina & Matt Gutzeit’s wedding reception. Its hard to come across back to back nights, where the guests were just “in the mood” to dance and party, which most of my DJ friends on here know that helps to make or break any event.

I take my DJ position very seriously. When I DJ an event and I don’t get the response from the crowd that I come to expect, it gets to me! It makes me second guess myself. Did I play the right songs? Was I not personable enough? Or are most of the guests from out of town and they just want to touch base with people they haven’t seen in a while, so is that the reason for them not dancing? But let me tell you about these two events I had this weekend.

First of all, this Prom! These teens were some of the most well behaved, respectful, out-going, energetic, enthusiastic “school crowds” I’ve performed for. As I’ve said before on my blogs, I just enjoy so much performing for this school. I just don’t get the traditional, well I’ll come out and say it; “butt head kids” I get with other schools! Ha ha – And the Administration NEVER gives me crap about the music I play. I mean, all my music is radio edit, so what else can you really ask for? The kids listen to it on the radio, why can’t they be allowed to dance to it, at an event they paid to attend? Matt & Melina’s Wedding Reception was just a party waiting to unfold! What do you get, when you take a ceremony that takes place at 2pm, and a wedding reception that starts at 6pm, and include a party bus??? Use your imagination! Ha ha ha…The crowd at this reception was freakin’ awesome!!! There wasn’t a single song I’d play that cleared the floor. Everyone just wanted to dance and have a great time, and that’s what makes the best wedding reception.

Now, onto the point of this Blog. Most of you know I’ve been DJ’ing since I was a teen… I posted a Facebook status this weekend while I was at the wedding, about how much fun I was having at this reception, and how much fun the crowd was having. My old boss from Skateland replied “That talent must be from all those years of spinning at Skateland” and that really made me open my eyes about something. I owe A LOT to the McChesney & McComb family. They have always been there for me, from day 1 when I started working there (and I won’t disclose when I started!) ‘til this day I get help and support from them. They helped me build this business from the ground up, and its my lively hood, and I owe it all to them. From Dianne who offered me my first job ever, to Dan who continues to do what he can to help me and my business thrive.

So I realized I need to somehow return the favor for everything they’ve done for me. “Pay it forward, per se.” Most of you have heard about Skateland, probably have grown up there yourself, or have at least been there. I challenge you, that within the next Month you make time to Visit Skateland Arena, in Mt. Morris Michigan. Take your kids out on a Saturday afternoon, if you’re 18 or older and enjoy R&B music go on Wednesday Night, if you’re a teen go out to one of their Friday Night sessions. Throw your son or daughter an awesome birthday party out there, its very reasonable. Look at their website, and see what all they offer. I have a few ‘punk skater friends’ (no pun intended ;) ) on here, they also have a Skateboard Track on certain days, with different jumps and things to do. I have over 400 friends on here, and if you haven’t been there in a while, go visit everyone up there. It’s still and will always be family owned. Say hi to Dan, Dianne, Many, Peggy, Bill and anyone else up there.

I owe the world to them, and I hope you’ll take time to go up there and visit, or start making it a weekend place that you start going to. They always have tons of things to do for the kids, and new ideas/games/concerts happening all the time.

Genesee... One of my fav schools!

Hey!

Genesee High is one of my favorite schools by far because for one, I graduated there :) and two, I truly feel welcome here, and as a DJ that means a lot. When you have most the faculty programmed into your phone so when they call and they pop up on my Caller ID, I know it's to welcome me back for yet another great show.

One thing about Genesee, is when they come out to a dance, they come to, um... PARTY! I never have a hard time getting their dance floor packed. They are just awesome students, respectful (which means a lot coming from a High School), energetic, fun, all around great students. I hope to be their DJ for many many years to come! Adam & Candance Tie the Knot (May 8, 2010)

Well hmm... I'm not the greatest at blogging, because all I have to say whenever I perform at a wedding, how much fun I had. Which I think is why I believe I do such a great job at weddings, because I think I have as much fun performing as the people having the fun!

The original plan was to have the ceremony outside, but as you can tell from the 1st picture, in the background the darker clouds rolling away... Yeah, it was hit and miss on the rain. So, we moved it inside, and the lady who decorated the hall, did a phenomenal job! I played the ceremony music as well as the music for the reception.

All n' all it was just a great time. Look forward for the next few days, I have Genesee's Prom coming up Friday, as well as another wedding Saturday!

Mr. & Mrs. Quentin Barret, tie the knot! April 24, 2010

Well, I'm just getting home (April 24th, 2010) from Quentin & Kesha's wedding reception, and figured I'd update the blog. I've done 3 tonight, sorry for slacking on posting these! I had personal doubts of how the evening went, but the bride and groom both swear they had a great time. One main thing I gotta say about tonight is this family LOVES to hustle! I couldn't play enough hustle songs. This first picture of the bride and her mother, they were dancing to Drop the bass, and Uncle Luke I Wanna Rock. Then the last picture was towards the beginning of the night, the bride had a special dance with all the "Baby Girls" in the wedding party... This one little girl, she knows how to get down! But, all n' all this night was great! Congratulations Quin and Kesha! Thanks for letting me be apart of your wedding day!

Girl Scouts Mall Lock In

Well, I'm glad this gig finally came through. We tentatively had it scheduled for last year, but not enough time was given to plan, so not enough girls signed up for the event. So they post-poned the event, to a later date, which was a few weeks ago. This time around, they had 500+ girls walking around Genesee Valley Mall, from around 10:30-5 in the morning. Some stores opened for business to sell items at a discounted rate to these shop-a-holics, and you could camp out in the middle of the 'wings' of the mall. MIProDJ provided karaoke, music and other fun activities to keep these girls having a blast all night. Thanks to Tiffany and Brenda for allowing me to be apart of your event, and hope to see you all next year!

U of M Presidents Ball

MIProDJ was excited to be invited to the 25th Annual Presidents Ball, for University of Michigan. If you remember last year, I had the honor of DJing a 20 year sorority reunion for U of M, and that's how I acquired this gig. I had a great time at the reunion, so I was a little mis-led by the Presidents Ball. Honestly, I didn't know what to expect, but I didn't expect almost 3 hours of awards!!! I was warned by quite a few people, that "normally" not too many people hang around after the awards portion, so I had to start off with a few to "hook" them into staying! And it worked! I had a packed dance floor all night! Thank you Brian for allowing me to entertain your guests this year, and hope to see you next year!

Daddy Daughter Dance 2010

Michigan Professional DJ was invited back again for their annual Daddy Daughter Dance. This was the best turn out for a daddy daughter dance that I've seen in a long time! The girls had a blast, the teachers got involved dancing and the fathers... well, they had a night just spending quality time with their daughters. It was nice to actually see the dads dance, and let down their "manly-ness" a little bit. I provided glow sticks for the girls, an exciting light show, a great music video show and of course just all around great entertainment.

Party In The USA!

Well, I had another great year entertaining a very awesome group of teachers... We brought along our photo booth as well... They had a blast with that.

I'm sorry, but when I was in high school I thought teachers had nothing better to do but to be mean and grade papers, but these people are just great and know how to party! There's really nothing much else to say on this blog... This party was just so much fun for the entertainer and the entertained! Enjoy the pics... Genesee High Snowcoming 2010

I had the privilege of playing at my favorite school again... This time, it was for their annual Snowcoming dance. They had a pretty decent turn out. This year's theme was RAVE! Sort of awkward for a school, but I don't judge :) Some dressed up with painted clothes, they put laundry detergent on your body (if you desired) as you paid your admission, strobe lights, black lights, glow sticks... I even brought along the Music Video Show this year as an added bonus for the school just being the greatest client ever! Just a token of my appreciation for their continued business.

Genesee Jr High Valentines Dance

Man... This has got to be the best year ever, for Michigan Professional DJ! I can't say I've been so busy it's taken me two weeks to finally make a post about this years Junior High Valentines Dance, but it's the best excuse I have!!! :)

This year's Valentines Dance was a great success, and it made me sit back and think that I might have to have a little chat with the Administration to include them in more dances. We'll see what happens in the future.

"Two outa Three aint bad..."

Well, its February 1st and I received some response from the Report Cards I give after each event... I had 3 weddings in January, and got back 2 responses thus far. This year I'm changing it up a little bit... Most DJ's want you to just click and rate on a scale from 1-5 on each point they think are popular... But, if you think about it, how easy is it to make up a fake date, name and click a whole bunch of "Excellent" on a paper and say hey, "here's a reference from a wedding I did last week!"

This year, I'm asking for all B&G's to give me heart felt feelings, on the way they felt their big day went... And to start the year off, here are a few examples!!

From Matt & Samantha Schwartz... (January 2, 2010)

Your Experience: Overall it was wonderful!! Jason did a great job reading the audience and keeping people on the dance floor all night long!!
Quality of Customer Service via Telephone: Not much telephone service, but whenever we called Jason he was very accommodating and helpful. We did communicate via email and Jason was very responsive in a timely manner.
Planning Assistance: The questionnaire was great. Matt and I were able to sit down and discuss the important decisions on music choices on our own time and then get it to Jason. When we needed song choices for the special dances and intro he was very helpful and offered a good list to choose from.
Friendliness of your DJ: Very friendly and wonderful to work with!DJ’s Performance: It was great. He played good music during dinner that was not too loud for the crowd. He also was very on top of everything and keep the reception moving and reminded us when different things needed to be done. Jason kept people on the dance floor for 6 hrs! Everyone had a great time thanks to such a great DJ!
DJ’s Appearance: Very Professional.
System Appearance: Professional Sound Quality: Great, even being put over on the side of the room (sorry about that!)
Lighting Effects: Good.
Music Selection: Perfect. Everyone enjoyed it and it kept everyone on the floor.Incorporation of your Requests: As far as I know Jason did a good job incorporating the requests of the guests.
Do you feel the amount you paid, was worth the entertainment you received? Would you have paid more for the same entertainment, knowing what you know now? Yes , the entertainment was worth the price we paid. It was excellent entertainment at a very reasonable price. We would have paid more for the same entertainment knowing what we know now.
Would you recommend me to others? : Definitely! May your comments be shared with others? Yes
Your Testimonial: Jason did a fabulous job at our Wedding on January 2nd. The music during dinner was perfect and Jason kept us on track when it was time to start the dancing. He had all the songs we wanted and kept the party moving. Jason did a great job judging the audience and keeping people of all ages out on the dance floor. There were still people dancing and having a good time 6 hours later when the lights went on! Everyone really enjoyed themselves and we had lots of complements for the DJ!

Andy & Brenda had their reception at the Knights of Columbus in Birch Run Michigan. As always, I played some great background music while guests arrived. The B&G had their wedding party come in to "When the sun goes down" and they came in to "I gotta feeling", which really set the tone for the night, because the night was a great night!

A few highlights of the night...

Every time the B&G kissed, I had the whole crowd go "aaaawwwwww!"
Dollar Dance Auction! The Groom sold for more than the Bride! $30 Groom, $25 Bride!
Longest married couple besides the B&G was 42 years! What a accomplishment!
And as usual, a packed dance floor! My specialty :)

Adam & Rachel Tie the Knot

Adam & Rachel had their ceremony and reception at The Bavarian Inn, in Frankenmuth Michigan this past Friday. The B&G wanted a very “non-traditional” wedding, which is definitely what they got! But even at that, it was one of the finest settings you could ever image for the Big Day!

They decided to have a “kid-friendly” area, which provided an area for the little ones to draw, and make crafts and then later they were also allowed to make their own teddy bears down in the Toy Shop! I gave Rachel the idea to have a “Kids Candy Toss” which was a hit, because they decided not to have a Garter or Bouquet toss. Once the music started, the kids had a blast dancing… Personally, I think most of the adults didn’t want to dance because they were enjoying themselves watching the little ones have a ball!

A few highlights of the night…

The Vow recited to Miss Madeline… Was quite touching. {tear}
Uncle Stu, singing “What a Wonderful World”… and once he got to Verse 3, when he sang “I hear babies cry”; and he paused and told the crowed to pinch their babies!!! Obviously he was joking, but what a great moment!
This little boy, he had to be about 2 years old, who was getting down, to Boom Boom Pow! Claimed to be his favorite song by his mother!

I also got a chance to work with Don and Tara Whitmire, of Whitmire Photography. A great couple and we had a lot of fun working with them.

Matt and Samantha’s wedding reception was held at Holy Redeemer in Burton Michigan. I had a great time working with some great vendors. Pat, who was the caterer at the hall and Kelly [the photographer]. The first guest arrived at 3p, so I started the slide show that was provided by the B&G along with some relaxing background music. I think everything about this evening was flawless. From the Bridal Party and B&G entrance at about 4:30 until the last dance at 12:56 to end out the night, it was just all n all a beautiful reception.

A few highlights of the night…

The Best Man’s speech… “Marriage is kind of like football… You put your heart and soul into it every day during the week, just hoping to score on the weekend!”
A slam packed dance floor ALL NIGHT!
When guests clicked their glasses to make the B&G kiss, Matt went running to his Bride, but then Matt’s father jumped in front of him and grabbed a kiss for himself!

The next day, I viewed a great post from the Brides Mother on facebook… “I can not believe that a reception that started at 3 pm could go strong until midnight! WHAT A BLAST!” THANK YOU JASON!
